chicken out
I’m loving Channel 4’s food fight season (despite the teasingly misleading ad campaign). If you haven’t seen Hugh’s Chicken Run which has been on the last couple of nights, check out the concluding part tonight. It’s a real eye-opener even if you think you know the difference between battery and free range chickens. It definitely brings up lots of conundrums – getting upset for having to cull the odd weak bird can seem ridiculous given they’re all going the same way in the end. I thought I could rest easy knowing I don’t eat chicken, but there are still a whole host of moral reasons not to eat eggs too – even free range laying hens sometimes have their sensitive beaks cut, and also half the newborn chicks get culled straight away just for being the wrong sex. See Peta for more info and pledge to buy free range only in 2008.
